In Character Information

Character Name: Rapunzel

Canon: Tangled

Timeline: The morning of her birthday, before reaching the kingdom

Character's Age: 18

Powers, Skills, Pets and Equipment: Canonly, Rapunzel has hair about 70 feet in length. It has magical properties which, upon singing the proper incantation will glow and heal people/keep people young. She can also understand animals. She doesn’t speak their language, but she understands them well enough and they understand her in return.

She will also be carrying the satchel she took from Flynn Rider, with the tiara, and a frying pan inside. She would also have her friend Pascal (a chameleon) with her. I’m not sure if Pascal would be considered an appable character, so I’ll leave that up to your modly discretion.

Canon History:
Wiki Link

Personality:
Living in a tower all her life has left Rapunzel as a work-in-progress. For eighteen years she has had nothing but Gothel’s word and a few books to understand how the world around her works. Gothel had spent all that time warning her of the dangers of the world, but Rapunzel still came out of it optimistic. She wants to believe the best in the people she meets, even if the prospect of meeting them is frightening. Only through her own experiences out of the tower is she able to draw real, solid conclusions about people. When she went to the Snuggly Duckling tavern, which was filled with some nasty, brutish looking guys, she was frightened. Going by all the stories Gothel had told her the men there could tear her limb from limb! Despite that she was able to overcome her fears under pressure, and implored the men to be inspired by their dreams. Thanks to her optimism she was able to make friends with each and every one of them.

Even when she was being sheltered in the tower by Gothel, Rapunzel refused to be anything but optimistic. She found various ways to entertain herself, and even convinced herself that life in the tower was the best. The only thing she longed for outside of her tower was to see the floating lights just once. It is only the realization that she while never, ever get to see the lights while she listened to Gothel that forced her to leave by her own means. Throughout their years in the tower together, Gothel found ways to keep Rapunzel meek through verbal put-downs. Rapunzel was made to feel inferior, ugly, and weak when compared to her “mother”. She is still very much in the process of understanding that she is so much more than that. Her confidence is growing, but she can still be timid and shy.

Because she is just gaining these kinds of experiences she is still somewhat naïve. However, this doesn’t make her stupid. While Gothel’s warnings had been intended to frighten her, Rapunzel now uses those warnings to serve her. She is aware that there are bad people in the world, and carefully plans for this. When Flynn arrives into her tower she does not blindly accept him, but holds him prisoner and makes a deal with him. She knows what he wants and it takes working together with him to build up her trust in him. She also is competent in defending herself with her hair and a frying pan of all things.

Rapunzel is high energy. When she’s excited she is ecstatic. When she is sad, she is dismal. She feels everything so deeply and it always shows. She isn’t very good at concealing her emotions. If she is conflicted in her feelings she will talk them out until she draws her own conclusions. Rapunzel is also a creative soul. One of her favorite pastimes is painting. In the opening song of the film, Rapunzel describes doing various activities in addition to painting, like baking, dancing, cleaning, playing chess and darts, and candle making all in the course of one morning. She enjoys learning new things and does so with great speed. She focuses her energy on creating and expanding her horizons, but life in the tower had begun to stifle her. It is only by leaving the tower that she is able to continue her growth.

Above all Rapunzel is kind, caring, and understanding. She inexplicably brings joy to people around her just by being herself. Her kindness and warmth spread out to all of the lives she touches, like Flynn, the thugs at the Snuggly Duckling, Maximus, and the people of Corona. She inspires them to be better people. The thugs follow their dreams because of her. Flynn realizes there is more to life than being rich and alone because of her. Just be being her friendly self she ignites change. She doesn’t work at being so kind, nor does she have an agenda for changing people; it is just natural for her to be that way.

Why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting?
Given her canon point, Rapunzel is still growing and learning who she is, and who she has the potential to be. While her canon is a story of self-discovery, I feel that the setting here will expand that story even more. Being so far from home with so many strangers will be frightening and overwhelming for her at first. The struggles in Anatole will push her to be stronger and more thoughtful than ever before. Ultimately, she will rely on others to support her at first, but she will also rely on them to learn, so that she doesn’t need as much help, and will instead be able to provide better support for others in the future. Rapunzel is a team player and will do her best to get along with people. Despite the danger she will adapt. She is already fairly decent at defending herself during a conflict, but she is bound to need some improvement there. She’ll be willing and able to learn so many new things about the world around her, the people she’s now living beside, and ultimately about herself. She’ll yearn to go home, but she will find ways to make the best out of her situation.

Network Post Sample:
Hello?

[The camera shot is shaky at best as Rapunzel fumbles with the new device.]

I hope this thing is working…I’ve never seen anything like it before.

You see, I’m lost. Like, very, very lost. I was on my way to see the floating lights. I was really going to see them. Up close. Finally. This is kind of a really important day for me, and I’d really appreciate any help you could give me. I lost someone. He goes by Flynn Rider. He’s my guide. Well, I mean he’s more than just a guide. He’s my friend.

[She pauses and looks away with a wistful expression.]

I think.

[She looks down and mumbles to herself while she twirls a bit of her hair between her fingers.]

I hope he hasn’t been caught… Please. Has anyone seen or heard of him? Or could you at least tell me how to get to the lights? I was so close.

Third Person Sample:
When Rapunzel woke up covered in soft, delicate sheets, she knew right away she wasn’t where she belonged. She had fallen asleep on the forest floor the night before, with Eugene just across the campfire from her. She opened her eyes and bolted upright in the bed. There was now grass, no campfire, and no Eugene. Panicked, she scrambled out of bed and nearly tripped over her hair. She bundled the mass of hair up into her arms and hurriedly explored each nook and cranny of the room.

“Eugene?” she asked, softly at first. “Eugene!?” Soon she was shouting the name, hoping and praying that her voice would reach him. She kept expecting him to turn up around some corner with that relaxed grin of his, telling her about some grand adventure he’d had while she was sleeping. But he wasn’t there. He wasn’t anywhere. Had he abandoned her? Maybe he’d decided that she was too much trouble after all. Suddenly she gasped and dove back towards the bed. She searched the sheets, and much to her relief, found what she was looking for. The satchel was there, and her frying pan and the tiara were still inside. For a brief moment she was relieved that he hadn’t taken it and left her.

What if she had been kidnapped? Had mother returned and taken her away from him?
Rapunzel’s legs wanted to give out, but she fought the urge to collapse to the floor. She needed to figure out what was going on. There was nothing familiar about her surroundings. The furnishings, the appliances, even the architecture was foreign to her. Where was she and how could she get away?

Finally, she moved towards one of the windows. She looked out on to the surrounding area and it was just as strange to her at the room was. The forest she had been traveling through was nowhere in sight and this could not possibly be the kingdom where they had the floating lights. She shook slightly out of fear as she clutched the satchel close to her chest.

I need to get back,” she whispered. “I just have to.”

Anything else? Nothing I can think of! :)
