Setting:
Rapunzel was born princess of a kingdom called Corona. The kingdom is fictional, but is heavily based on European countries such as Germany, Hungary, and Poland. Rapunzel’s fairytale also originates from Germany and the Brothers Grimm. The movie likely takes place in the 1780’s, and so Rapunzel is unfamiliar with any kind of modern convinces. However, being a Disney film Rapunzel has a lot of modern ideas and ways of behaving, despite her time period.

Corona is strictly a monarchy ruled by king and queen, which will be inherited by Rapunzel someday. The kingdom itself appears relatively peaceful. The film doesn’t give any in depth details of Corona’s politics, but everything we see of the kingdom and its royals implies that there are no major conflicts in which they are involved. The people are happy and love their rulers for all the good they do.

There is magic in Rapunzel’s world, but only if one knows where to find it. It is rare, and usually secret, like the flower that brought Gothel’s youth and saved Rapunzel’s real mother, the queen. Animals are also somewhat magical in the sense that they behave more like human’s than animals. Rapunzel’s best friend Pascal is a chameleon who behaves more like a chaperone for Rapunzel and Flynn as they travel together. The royal horse, Maximus hunts Flynn down even after his rider has been lost. Animals have unique personalities, and seem to have an understanding with the humans around then.

Personality:
Living in a tower all her life has left Rapunzel as a work-in-progress. For eighteen years she has had nothing but Gothel’s word and a few books to understand how the world around her works. Gothel had spent all that time warning her of the dangers of the world, but Rapunzel still came out of it optimistic. She wants to believe the best in the people she meets, even if the prospect of meeting them is frightening. Only through her own experiences out of the tower is she able to draw real, solid conclusions about people. When she went to the Snuggly Duckling tavern, which was filled with some nasty, brutish looking guys, she was frightened. Going by all the stories Gothel had told her, the men there could tear her limb from limb! Despite that she was able to overcome her fears under pressure, and implored the men to be inspired by their dreams. Thanks to her optimism she was able to make friends with each and every one of them.

Even when she was being sheltered in the tower by Gothel, Rapunzel refused to be anything but optimistic. She found various ways to entertain herself, and even convinced herself that life in the tower was the best. For the most part she was content and even happy to live there, because she truly believed in Gothel. The only thing she longed for outside of her tower was to see the floating lights just once. It is only the realization that she while never, ever get to see the lights while she listened to Gothel that forced her to leave by her own means. Throughout their years in the tower together, Gothel found ways to keep Rapunzel meek through verbal put-downs. Rapunzel was made to feel inferior, ugly, and weak when compared to her “mother”. She is still very much in the process of understanding that she is so much more than that. Her confidence is growing, but she can still be timid and shy.

Because she is just gaining these kinds of experiences she is still somewhat naïve. However, this doesn’t make her stupid. While Gothel’s warnings had been intended to frighten her, Rapunzel now uses those warnings to serve her. She is aware that there are bad people in the world, and carefully plans for this. When Flynn arrives into her tower she does not blindly accept him, but holds him prisoner and makes a deal with him. She knows what he wants and it takes working together with him to build up her trust in him. Mostly through interactions with Flynn we find that Rapunzel also has a knack of banter. Flynn is a very easy going guy and a smooth talker, which Rapunzel quickly recognizes. She's often able to shoot him down, or throw his lines back at him with a sassy world of her own. Given Rapunzel's tendency for sweetness, people often forget that she is witty and clever, too.

Rapunzel is high energy. When she’s excited she is ecstatic. When she is sad, she is dismal. She feels everything so deeply and it always shows. She isn’t very good at concealing her emotions. If she is conflicted in her feelings she will talk them out until she draws her own conclusions. Rapunzel is also a creative soul. One of her favorite pastimes is painting. In the opening song of the film, Rapunzel describes doing various activities in addition to painting, like baking, dancing, cleaning, playing chess and darts, and candle making all in the course of one morning. She enjoys learning new things and does so with great speed. She focuses her energy on creating and expanding her horizons, but life in the tower had begun to stifle her. It is only by leaving the tower that she is able to continue her growth.

Above all Rapunzel is kind, caring, and understanding. She inexplicably brings joy to people around her just by being herself. Her kindness and warmth spread out to all of the lives she touches, like Flynn, the thugs at the Snuggly Duckling, Maximus, and the people of Corona. She inspires them to be better people. The thugs follow their dreams because of her. Flynn realizes there is more to life than being rich and alone because of her. Just be being her friendly self she ignites change. She doesn’t work at being so kind, nor does she have an agenda for changing people; it is just natural for her to be that way. She’s definitely a peace keeper, which given her royal blood, is not surprising. She’s able to mediate difficult situations like when the thugs at the Snuggly Duckling were threatening her and Flynn and when Maximus arrived again to take Flynn away. She was able to stop the fighting in both situations and convince everyone that a better solution could be found.

The realization that she is In Between dreaming, life, and death will be shocking for Rapunzel. She’s likely to panic a great deal at first over the concept. She was just really beginning to live her life back home and being pulled away from that will hurt her. She will mourn this bad turn of events, but will eventually grow more optimistic about the situation, especially with information and support from others. She’ll try not to burden others while she comes to terms with it all. Rapunzel is still growing and learning who she is, and who she has the potential to be. Being so far from home with so many strangers will be frightening and overwhelming for her at first. Ultimately, she will rely on others to support her at first, but she will also rely on them to learn, so that she doesn’t need as much help, and will instead be able to provide better support for others in the future. Rapunzel is a team player and will do her best to get along with people. Despite any danger she will adapt. She is already fairly decent at defending herself during a conflict, but she is bound to need some improvement there. She’ll be willing and able to learn new things about the world around her, the people she’s now living beside, and ultimately about herself. She’ll yearn to go home, but she will find ways to make the best out of her situation.

Appearance:

Abilities:
Canonly, Rapunzel has hair about 70 feet in length. It has magical properties which, upon singing the proper incantation, will glow and heal people/keep people young. She is also able to use her hair for climbing, swinging, and as a whip-like weapon. She can also communicate animals. She doesn’t speak their language, but she understands them well enough and they understand her in return.

Other, more common abilities include: baking, running, dancing, painting, sewing, a love of reading, pottery, candle making, singing, playing guitar. She also has a talent for mediating difficult situations such as the struggle at the Snuggly Duckling and the argument between Flynn and Maximus. She’s a multitalented girl!

Inventory: Aside from the clothes on her back Rapunzel will be carrying the satchel she took from Flynn Rider, with the tiara, a hairbrush, and a frying pan inside.

Suite: No preference to floors, but I think Rapunzel is most suited for the Wood Sector. She doesn’t pick fights or make waves, but she’ll do what needs to be done if it comes down to it. She’s ridiculously energetic. It’s a usual day for her to wake up at daybreak and keep moving with chores, hobbies, and games until night. She can be stubborn under the right circumstances as well. As she says “And when I promise something, I never break that promise. Ever.”

In-Character Samples:
Third Person:
The campfire was dying low but Rapunzel remained awake. Pascal and Eugene were already fast asleep. She looked up at the stars through the treetops and listened to the hum of the life of the forest at night. Even this simple moment was a new experience from her life in the tower. Sure, she had seen the stars from windows, and heard the forest wild life from afar, but now she was actually a part of it all. She was a part of the forest. A part of the world. She could never have claimed that from inside her tower.

And really, she’d never wanted to. She had been content to listen to her mother about the evils and dangers of the world outside. The tower was a safe haven and Rapunzel had been glad to be safe from all the things that might harm her. But now that she was out, now that she was free, she was beginning to doubt her mother’s concerns.

Obviously she wasn’t all wrong. She and Flynn had been chased by quite a few strange and dangerous people already. They’d almost drowned, too. But she’d met all kinds of friends; friends who had helped her escape when trouble had come. She had met Flynn, and things were going well. Maybe they were friends now. Maybe they could be more.

Rapunzel turned on her side and nestled on a blanket of her own hair. Her trip had mother upset, but she truly thought it was worth it now. She didn’t regret leaving her tower. Soon she would see the lanterns she had been reaching out to for years now. Somehow she would make it up to mother and make her understand that wanting to be a part of the world, instead of hiding from it, wasn’t so bad.

The thought comforted her as she finally drifted off to sleep.

Network:
[You’re greeted by an extreme close-up of Rapunzel’s face as the communicator turns on. You’ll see the bright green of her eyes and the faint trail of freckles across her nose and cheeks. She gasps and pulls the device away from her face, giving you a better look of her from waist up.]

Oh! It’s working. I think. I’m still not quite sure I understand it all.

Um, my name is Rapunzel. [She gives the camera a hesitant smile and waves.] So, I guess other people can see and hear me from this? I’ve never heard of anything that can do that before.

Then again, I’ve never heard of this place before either. [She shrugs as she laughs. It’s a hollow sort of laugh that isn’t doing a very good job of hiding her insecurity. She pauses and takes a breath.]

If people really can see this, I don’t suppose it would hurt to ask…has anyone seen a chameleon around? His name is Pascal. And a man who goes by Flynn Rider? I was traveling with them before I woke up here. I was hoping maybe they’re here too?

Well, that’s all, then. Oh! Um, thank you. For your help. Bye!

[And the feed abruptly cuts off.]
